Travelling as a tourist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the beginning I travelled from place to place, paid high prices and learned how life in Cuba works for travellers. I met many friendly people, most of them working in tourism, and quickly learned where to exchange money into Cuban pesos rather than just CUC. A birthday party among travellers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We celebrated my friend Jay\u2019s 35th birthday in a villa with travellers from all over the world. We had met six years earlier in Essaouira, Morocco. The real Cuba<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, I lived with families and experienced how people live together in everyday life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On long bus journeys, people fall asleep on their neighbour\u2019s shoulder \u2013 even if they don\u2019t know each other.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>At the bus stop or in a restaurant, people discuss openly and directly, and everyone is allowed to join in.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>When food runs short, friends and neighbours help out; whoever has too much shares.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>One family\u2019s house had become too small. They own little, which makes life simple and creative: whatever is missing is made by hand \u2013 right down to their own officially licensed professions. Music and dancing in the street are a matter of course, and there is always time for friends and neighbours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSlow is smooth and smooth is fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hurricane Matthew and a historic day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During my trip, Hurricane Matthew hit the town of Baracoa. I visited the devastated Baracoa and saw how quickly people cleared up and rebuilt. On 25 November, the day I flew to Mexico, Fidel Castro died \u2013 I only found out the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
